Discover Kea

The Island of Kea
Kea, also known as Tzia, is a lush and traditional island of the Cyclades, just an hour from Athens. Unlike its arid neighbors, it’s rich in oak forests, springs, and greenery, while its capital, Ioulida, charms with stone alleys, tiled roofs, and old windmills. The island holds a deep history, from ancient Karthea and myths of water-nymphs to Byzantine monasteries. 'Nature hides itself', this pre-Socratic thought phrase describes fully the mystic character of Kea's natural environment, visible only to the restless traveler. Today, Kea is loved for its medieval trails that used to connect the ancient four cities of Ioulida, Korissos, Poiessa and Karthea. Discover the abundance of the natural environment and the timeless presence of Kea in history and almost all of them end up in picturesque and isolated beaches.

Cultural Heritage
Karthea, one of Kea’s four ancient city-states, is the island’s most important archaeological site and a must-visit for history lovers. Perched on a hill overlooking the Aegean, it preserves the remains of temples dedicated to Apollo and Athena, a theatre, an acropolis, and parts of its ancient walls. Accessible only by hiking or boat, the journey to Karthea is as memorable as the site itself, with trails offering stunning views of the sea and countryside. Its secluded setting and timeless ruins give visitors a unique glimpse into Kea’s classical past.
